Quarterback Diana Flores has become a prominent figure in women’s flag football, winning world titles and MVPs. She’s even starred in a popular Super Bowl commercial. Flores is leading efforts to promote flag football ahead of the sport making its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The NCAA has added flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program, and the University of Nebraska will introduce it as a varsity sport. Flores is now an open book on the subject as she authored “Flag Football For Dummies.” Her achievements on the field include guiding Team Mexico to back-to-back World Games gold medals.
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama celebrated becoming the first French player named as an NBA All-Star Game starter before turning his attention to a regular-season game. Wembanyama had a season-high seven 3-pointers and finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds, and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 123-110 on Monday. For Wembanyama, his 17th double-double in 29 games this season has more to do with snapping a six-season playoff drought than proving he deserves an All-Star start. The Spurs (30-13) won their third straight to remain second in the Western Conference, 5 1/2 games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Premier League Bournemouth has signed Hungary midfielder Alex Toth from Ferencvaros for a reported $14 million. The 20-year-old Toth has agreed a five-and-a-half-year contract. He has earned nine caps for Hungary and won the domestic title with Ferencvaros last season. Bournemouth has gained a reputation for discovering and developing players before selling them on for profit in recent years. Antoine Semenyo, Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez have moved to top European teams for big fees in the past 12 months and Bournemouth will hope it has unearthed another talent in Toth.

Defending overall champion Federica Brignone returned after a nine-month injury layoff. Julia Scheib of Austria was third, 0.39 behind. Mikaela Shiffrin was fourth, 0.89 back despite a significant error midway down. Brignone was seventh, 1.18 behind in her first race since breaking multiple bones in her left leg in April. Brignone is hoping to compete for host Italy at the Milan Cortina Olympics. The Winter Games open Feb. 6 with the women skiing in nearby Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Iowa has gotten off to a strong start in Big Ten play, winning its first seven conference games. The 10th-ranked Hawkeyes have the difficult part of their schedule in front of them with contests against Maryland, Ohio State, USC and UCLA in their next four games. The gauntlet starts Thursday at Maryland. A victory would give Iowa its best start in the conference since the 1995-96 team won its first 11 Big Ten games. Iowa moved into the top 10 of the AP women’s basketball poll on Monday for the first time since Caitlin Clark’s senior season two years ago when the team finished No. 2. That was the last time the Hawkeyes started conference play 7-0.
Sean McDermott insists the Buffalo Bills should have advanced in the playoffs after a call he vehemently disputed. The Denver Broncos won 33-30 in overtime in the divisional playoff, but McDermott argued a catch by Brandin Cooks was wrongly ruled an interception. This decision set up Denver’s winning drive. McDermott, who lost his job Monday, called for an explanation, which was provided by referee Carl Cheffers. The call has sparked debate among analysts and former players. Denver coach Sean Payton also pointed out what he said was a missed safety call earlier in overtime that should have ended the game.
Houston was the nation’s preseason No. 2 team, had a brief stint at No. 1 and took a tumble to No. 8 following its lone loss. The Cougars have kept winning since that three-point loss to Tennessee nearly two months ago, yet can’t seem to make up much ground in the AP Top 25. Now at No. 6, Houston faces a stiff test at No. 12 Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have yet to lose at home and have one of the nation’s best players in JT Toppin. The week in the AP Top 25 also includes No. 15 Vanderbilt at No. 20 Arkansas, No. 11 Illinois at No. 4 Purdue and No. 22 North Carolina at No. 14 Virginia.
The Oklahoma City Thunder have been handling wins and losses with a calm demeanor. On Saturday night, they lost to the Miami Heat 122-120, but their reaction was surprisingly composed. Despite a controversial foul call and missed violations, the Thunder remain focused on long-term goals. They lead the league with a 36-8 record after a win in Cleveland on Monday. Coach Mark Daigneault emphasizes learning from experiences rather than getting caught up in emotions. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to shine, and the team maintains a strong home and away record, trusting their process and development.
The Champions League resumes after its winter break with Arsenal protecting the only 100% record heading to Inter Milan and defending champion Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester City seeking wins to close on automatic qualification. Arsenal has six straight wins and needs a point to become the first team to secure a spot in the round of 16. Only the top eight progress directly to the last 16 so many of Europe’s top teams are battling to avoid dropping into positions 9-24 and having to go through the playoffs. Third-place PSG visits Sporting Lisbon, fourth-place Man City is at Bodø/Glimt and new coach Alvaro Arbeloa leads seventh-place Madrid against Monaco.
So, the Miami Dolphins’ Green Bay-based general manager hired the Green-Bay-based coach. It’s as simple as that. Maybe it’s as inspired as that, too.
BALTIMORE — If the Baltimore Ravens made a miscalculation when they hired John Harbaugh 18 years ago, they should make the same mistake again in 2026.
PHILADELPHIA — In the past week, the Philadelphia Eagles have made it known to sources around the league that hiring former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as their new offensive coordinator is their No. 1 offseason priority. That includes fired Giants coach Brian Daboll, who is expected t…
PITTSBURGH — If the Pittsburgh Steelers’ history of coaching searches means anything in their fourth such venture since 1969, the Rooney family has a type of coach that’s made their franchise one of the most successful ones of the modern era.
