The Vancouver Canucks reportedly have a “leading candidate” to become their next captain after trading Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in mid-December.

Last month, the Vancouver Canucks made the difficult decision to trade captain Quinn Hughes to Minnesota after reports circulated that he would not be signing a contract extension with the club when he becomes eligible in the offseason.

With Quinn Hughes gone, the Vancouver Canucks are without a captain for the first time since late-January 2023 to the home opener of the 2023-24 campaign after they parted ways with Bo Horvat in a deal with the New York Islanders.

Leading candidate reportedly emerges to become Vancouver Canucks’ next captain

In recent weeks, players like Elias Pettersson, Conor Garland and Tyler Myers have been suggested as candidates for the Canucks’ next captain, which will be their 16th in franchise history.

However, according to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie & Dhali, he’s hearing from sources that Filip Hronek appears to be the leading candidate at the moment to wear the ‘C’ for the Canucks.

“I’ve had more than one person tell me Hronek is the leading candidate to be the next captain.” Dhaliwal said.

The Canucks are going to take their time with choosing their next captain, especially with the amount of movement there’s going to be between now and the NHL’s trade deadline in early March and potentially in the offseason too, so it’s possible we might not see someone wearing the ‘C’ until the first game of the 2026-27 campaign.

If Filip Hronek is still around by the time training camp commences in mid-September, which all signs point to him being there based on comments made by his agent recently, then there’s no question he’ll be one of the top candidates for Adam Foote and his coaching staff.
