SSt. Louis Blues

Man to be sentenced for hitting St. Louis police officer

  • January 20, 2026

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Frank Carr was sentenced on Tuesday for hitting St. Louis Metropolitan Police Officer Nathan Spiess in a crash that resulted in the officer losing part of his leg.

Carr pleaded guilty in November to two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and one count of tampering with evidence. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to a year in jail, five years of probation and 100 hours of community service.

At the sentencing, Carr apologized to Spiess, his family and other officers, stating that the incident was an accident.

After the sentencing, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office sent the following statement:

The Court sentenced Frank Carr to 366 days in prison, followed by a seven-year suspended execution of sentence (SES) and five years of probation. He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service with an organization that works with amputees. The sentence was imposed for Carr’s criminal conduct during a March 17, 2025, accident on Interstate 70 in which Carr’s vehicle struck St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Nathan Spiess and a fleeing suspect. Officer Spiess suffered severe injuries that resulted in the amputation of his leg when he was struck by Carr’s vehicle while attempting to conduct an arrest.

Frank Carr pleaded guilty, on November 21, 2025, to two counts of leaving the scene of an accident causing physical injury and one count of tampering with physical evidence. This sentence holds Carr accountable for attempting to tow his vehicle for repairs in order to conceal his involvement in the accident. The accident occurred when Officer Spiess was pursuing multiple carjacking suspects who exited their vehicle on I-70 and attempted to flee on foot. The adult carjacking suspect has been charged with first-degree assault resulting in serious physical injury of a special victim, armed criminal action, aggravated fleeing, and resisting arrest. These charges are currently pending.

Officer Spiess was performing his duties in order to protect the community when this accident occurred and sustained life-altering injuries. The sentence the Court imposed holds the defendant accountable for his decision to attempt to cover-up his involvement in this tragic accident. We thank Officer Spiess and all members of the law enforcement community for their continued commitment to public safety and their willingness to place themselves in harm’s way to protect the St. Louis community.

Officer Spiess was injured by a driver on Interstate 70 last spring. The crash resulted in him losing a part of his leg.
