ALEXANDRIA — While a goal eluded the Alexandria girls hockey team to start the game, the pressure in the offensive zone flashed a consistent tone.

The Cardinals totaled 64 shots on goal in their 3-0 victory over Central Lakes Conference opponent St. Cloud Crush on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Runestone Community Center. The victory improved the team’s mark in conference play to a perfect 10-0 with two games remaining against CLC teams.

The shot discrepancy was on display throughout the opening period of the game, as Alexandria put up 22 shots compared to St. Cloud’s three shots on goal. However, the first tally of the game didn’t come for the Cardinals until early in the second period when Emily Doherty picked up her team-best 16th goal of the season off an assist from Maya Dutton.

Under duress for most of the game, Crush goalie Jordan Bovy made Alexandria earn each goal scored, stopping 61-of-64 shots she faced from the Cardinals’ constant presence in St. Cloud’s defensive zone. Conversely, Victoria Meyers tallied eight saves to earn her fifth shutout victory of the year.

Alexandria (16-5) broke through near the midway point in the third period on the advantage, as Jersey Severson found the back of the net. Emma Bassen and Skylar Thorson were credited with the assists. Teagan Cullen completed the scoring with an unassisted goal with five minutes left in the game.

The victory completed the season-series sweep of St. Cloud (12-8), having previously taken down the Crush on Nov. 20 by a 3-1 final. As it stands, the Cardinals have scored 11 points and hold a three-point lead over St. Cloud in the CLC standings. Fergus Falls in third with seven points and ROCORI-River Lakes has 6 1/2 points.

Alexandria will face ROCORI-River Lakes on the road at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, at River Lakes City Area in Richmond.
