The men’s ice hockey preliminary group round games start on February 11th. There will be many upcoming NHL draft prospects representing their countries during the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. Latvian defenseman Alberts Smits, regarded as the top international draft prospect, is a player to watch next month.

At 6’3” 205lbs, 18-year-old Smits’ development has seen his draft stock propel into a potential 2026 top 10 draft pick. The Latvian plays for Mikkelin Jukurit of the Finnish Liiga. His Finnish club currently sits in the relegation zone, but the young prospect continues to display his offensive potential. Among Jukurit defensemen, Smits ranks 1st in goals, 3rd in assists, and 2nd in average time on ice.

Compared to fellow Liiga rookie defensemen, the left-handed shooting Smits ranks 1st in goals, 2nd in assists, and 1st in points. The Latvian doesn’t stop at leading rookie defensemen as he leads all Liiga rookies in goals and average time on ice. Last season, Smits played in nine games, finishing with one goal and one assist. His role has increased during the 2025-2026 season, playing in 32 of Jukurit’s 39 games and becoming one of the team’s top defensemen.

His size, offensive mind, and great production on a poor team draw comparison to Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider. Smits pairs his unafraid attitude with top-notch physical and mental prowess. The 2026 NHL draft prospect excels in his own zone, controlling the puck, hitting opposing players, and creating exceptional chances. His good feel and confidence in his frame allow him to transition with surprisingly plus speed. His reach, stickhandling, and footwork make him superior to other defensive prospects.

At the Milano Cortina Olympics, Alberts Smits will represent Latvia, ranked 10th in the International Ice Hockey Federation’s world rankings. Latvia’s first preliminary round (Group C) game is on February 13th against the United States. Latvia finishes their preliminary round games on February 14th against Germany and on February 15th against Denmark.

In the upcoming 2026 NHL draft, Smits ranks 8th overall, 4th among all defensemen, and 1st among international defensemen. The Latvian prospect can make an immediate impact during his rookie NHL season. His offensive abilities and overall skills are desirable to any NHL organization. A positive showing at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics will almost guarantee Alberts Smits is a top 10 pick during the 2026 NHL Draft.
