(KNSI) – St. Cloud State University Athletics is inducting the 1986-87 men’s hockey team into its hall of fame.
The squad was the only one coached by the legendary Herb Brooks, who brought great transformation to the program in his brief stint behind the Huskies’ bench. He was a pivotal force behind the campaign to build the National Hockey Center. Brooks’ name now adorns the building on the south end of campus. Brooks also played a huge part in boosting the Huskies to the Division I level.
The ’86-’87 team set a school record at the time with 25 wins, 202 goals, 281 assists and total points. The signature victory was a win over Bemidji State in the national tournament. It finished in third place in Division III, the best overall result for a club until SCSU was national runner-up in 2021.
Mike Brodzinski was captain and the premier offensive player, netting 38 goals and 65 points.
