The Ottawa Senators continue to explore the trade market and GM Steve Staios remains active out there as he searched for a mid-six forward and a right-shot defenceman.

The Senators currently sit six points out of a playoff spot with a 22-19-7 record through 48 games, and while a wildcard spot may appear in reach, the team needs to step up its performance and go on a run if they want to make the post-season this season.

Staios is trying to help their chances as he explores his options for help at both ends of the ice.

Last week, Bruce Garrioch also reported the Senators are looking for a right-shot defenceman, citing “league executives” who told him “several times over the course of the past two weeks” that was the case.

The Senators have just over $6 million in current salary cap space and Staios could use that to his advantage if he finds outside reinforcements.

With depth up the middle, it appears as if the priority up front is to find another scoring winger to add to the group, but it is unclear whom Staios may be targeting at this time.

The Olympic roster freeze kicks in Feb. 4 at 3pm ET and lifts on Feb. 22, 12 days ahead of the March 6 trade deadline.
