The Carolina Hurricanes once again dropped the opening game of the Eastern Conference Final. Despite all the success that Carolina saw at home during the regular season, something just seems to go wrong when the lights get brighter.
This marks 13 straight losses in the conference final for the Hurricanes, going back to 2009. Under head coach Rod Brind’Amour, the loss was the ninth straight conference finals defeat.

The Hurricanes can’t explain what has happened, but if they want to avoid being swept again, something will need to change. The players still have confidence in themselves, but this losing streak has to be weighing on the back of their minds.
“All the confidence in the world we’re going to figure this out,” Carolina forward Seth Jarvis said.

These are certainly bold comments from Jarvis, considering the history of the team. But Carolina isn’t giving up, and will do what they can to even the series.
If the Hurricanes can’t figure things out, it could be another bitter playoff ending. Carolina has gotten to this point multiple times over the years, but it seems as if the game changes for them.

The Panthers are the defending champions for a reason, but Carolina looked flat all night. The offense couldn’t generate anything, and the defense looked like a shell of what we’ve come to see in the playoffs so far.
“They played a great game, you’ve got to tip your hat. But we created a bunch of turnovers and had a couple almost,” Brind’Amour said. “That’s the game. They’re trying to forecheck us and they probably put more pucks (deep) than we did tonight and they put more stress on us than we did on them.”
Game 2 will tell everyone a lot about this Hurricanes team, and if they are different from the past versions. If Carolina falls down 2-0 to the Panthers heading out on the road, there could be some real problems in store for this team.
