The four-goal comeback is still an elusive feat for the Vegas Golden Knights.
On Thursday, a heroic effort to salvage points came up short, and the Boston Bruins triumphed over the Golden Knights 4-3.
Disaster struck early for the Golden Knights by way of a double minor against Tomas Hertl. Charlie McAvoy would rip a clean shot from the point past Akira Schmid to put the Bruins up on the scoreboard first. Shortly after, Elias Lindholm would make good on the second minor to double up the lead.
A Tanner Jeannot goal off a turnover later, and the Golden Knights found themselves in a 3-0 hole within 54 seconds.
The second period would offer little in the way of relief. Tomas Hertl lost a rare netfront battle to Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov, and David Pastrnak would take advantage to put the Bruins up four goals.
However, the third period tilted everything on its head.
The top line finally got it going in the first minute of action, with Jack Eichel finally getting a moment to get something for the Golden Knights. With his goal, Eichel pushed his current point streak to 10 games.
It would not be long until the other point streak was added to. On the power play, Hertl gained redemption by getting his team-leading 21st goal of the season. Even more importantly, however, Mark Stone secured his 13th straight game with a point, breaking the Golden Knights franchise record.
Just as hope seemed to dim, however, Pavel Dorofeyev kept it alive with a six-on-five goal late in the period. The tally kept Dorofeyev tied with Hertl for the team lead in goals.
Unfortunately, it was too little, too late, and the Bruins survived to take the two points.
The Golden Knights will hope the third period can be a shot of momentum for the second leg of the back-to-back against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
