A win in Vegas may have unlocked something for the Philadelphia Flyers. Less than five minutes into Wednesday’s game in Utah, the Flyers had two goals on the board.

But the hot start was later met with a crushing ending. The Flyers squandered an empty-net chance, the Utah Mammoth tied the game in the final minute of regulation, then won it as Clayton Keller struck for a pair of goals in a 5-4 loss in overtime.

The Flyers got on the board just 30 seconds into the game. Cam York picked up a rebound for his fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0.

Just over four minutes later at 4:36, the Flyers added to the lead. Christian Dvorak took a lead pass from Travis Konecny and scored on the partial breakaway to make it 2-0.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 14-7 Flyers.

Just 58 seconds into the second period, the Flyers added a power-play goal. Bobby Brink got a rebound for his 12th goal of the season to open up a 3-0 lead.

The Mammoth responded with a pair of goals in short order. JJ Peterka scored his 17th of the season, finding a loose puck in the crease. Then Lawson Crouse scored from the slot for his 13th goal of the season. The two goals, separated by 36 seconds, suddenly cut the Flyers’ lead to one.

But the Flyers responded with another power-play goal at 10:28. Dvorak scored his second of the game and 12th of the season, following up his own rebound.

Through two periods, shots were 24-17 Flyers.

For most of the third, the Flyers maintained the two-goal cushion. Jamie Drysdale took a big hit from Jack McBain, and Noah Juulsen dropped the glove. Juulsen took an extra roughing minor, and the Mammoth made the Flyers pay.

Dylan Guenther‘s shot was deflected by Barrett Hayton, as Sam Ersson got a piece of it but not enough. The Flyers’ lead was back down to one.

In the two minutes, with the goalie pulled for Utah, Garnet Hathaway had a chance to ice it with an empty-net goal, but held onto the puck for too long and was stripped from behind by Nick Schmaltz. With 34.2 seconds remaining, Keller scored the equalizer, blowing past Travis Sanheim and beating Ersson to make it 4-4.

At 2:01 of overtime, Keller finished off the comeback off the rush, taking a pass from Guenther and scoring his 15th goal of the season.

Ersson finished with 22 saves on 27 shots in the loss. Karel Vejmelka made 25 saves on 29 shots in the win.

Dvorak had a three-point game. Trevor Zegras and Drysdale each had two assists. Keller also had a three-point game for Utah. Guenther and Schmaltz each had two points.

The Flyers finish up the road trip on Friday night against the Colorado Avalanche at 9 p.m.
