If you’ve watched any Flyers hockey this season, you have probably noticed Trevor Zegras at one point or another.
Zegras has had no problems with the transition from Anaheim to Philadelphia. The offseason acquisition has looked much more like himself from the early days in Anaheim than how his time in Southern California ended.
Part of the smooth transition might have been the relationships he had with Jamie Drysdale and Cam York prior to joining the Flyers. It could also be the new bonds he has created in the locker room with Travis Konecny, and fellow summer addition Christian Dvorak, with whom Zegras was the witness for while signing his extension.
No matter what, Zegras has been a steady force for the Flyers, and to this point, their most productive player.
In 49 games, Zegras has 19 goals, 27 assists, and 46 total points. He is on pace for around 31 goals, 45 assists, and 76 points. All of which would smash his previous career-highs. In fact, his 19 goals put him just four away from tying his career best, and we have yet to hit the Olympic Break.
Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet has said on multiple occasions that Zegras is focused. He’s not playing for social media clicks; he’s doing things to play winning hockey.
He leads the team in points, goals and power-play goals, and is tied for the team lead in assists. But his impact goes beyond leading the team in offense. Trevor Zegras has been the Flyers’ X-Factor this season.

Trevor Zegras has been the Flyers’ X-Factor
An X-Factor is commonly defined as “a variable in a given situation that could have the most significant impact on the outcome,” per the Oxford Dictionary.
So, let’s take Trevor Zegras and make him the variable. Our situation here is the Flyers’ record. Sure, you could look at his production and see how impactful he is to this team. However, when you look at the Flyers’ record in correlation with his production, you see that he has truly been the team’s X-Factor.
In games where Zegras has registered a point, the Flyers are 19-6-7. They have accumulated 45 of their 55 points this season in games where he has registered at least a goal and/or an assist.
In games where the 24-year-old forward has multiple points, the Flyers are 7-1-3. When Zegras tallies at least one assist (no goals), Philadelphia is 8-4-2, and 2-0-1 when he has multiple assists in a game.
The Flyers are 9-4-2 when Zegras scores a goal, and undefeated this year when he has multiple goals, going 4-0-0.
In any combination of multi-point games from Zegras this year, the Flyers are 7-1-3.
What makes an X-Factor and X-Factor is when you take the variable away from the situation, do you see the same results?
So, in games where Zegras has not recorded a point, the Flyers are 4-11-2.
Yeah, it’s an obvious statement. When players don’t score, of course, you expect the team to have worse results. To play devil’s advocate here, the Flyers scored one goal or fewer in 10 of the 17 games Zegras did not earn a point. It’s hard for most players to tally points in those games.
However, the point remains abundantly clear. When Trevor Zegras succeeds, the Flyers succeed too.
