Head coach Mike Sullivan reveals his game plan for the New York Rangers during the 2025-26 season

Mike Sullivan hasn’t been the head coach of the New York Rangers long, but he’s worked quickly to introduce himself to all of the players here. During his introductory press conference wants to turn the team around and place them on a winning path.
Mike Sullivan believes he can tap into the leadership in the New York Rangers locker room. In a thrilling discussion during his press conference, he believes the team can far exceed where they’ve been recently, and he can help.
GM Chris Drury made an aggressive pursuit in order to hire Sullivan for one reason, as one of the top NHL coaches in the league, he can bring a winning culture that’s been dwindling in the locker room.
“The one takeaway that I have from those conversations is I think there’s a fair amount of leadership in that room,” Sullivan said. “I think there’s a lot of character in that room just based on the initial conversations that I’ve had with these guys.”
The helpful part is that Sullivan already has experience coaching Rangers players during the Four Nations Face-Off, including Adam Fox, Chris Kreider, JT Miller, and Vinnie Trocheck.
“I know there’s a lot of talent in the dressing room, but as we all know talent alone doesn’t win championships. Teams win championships and I think that’s going to be our challenge from Day 1 is to become a team.”
Sullivan will also be the head coach of the 2026 US Olympic team in Milano Cortina. An exciting prospect, as we could soon see Miller and Fox once again put on the USA crest and compete for a gold medal.
Sullivan has two Stanley Cups to his name, in back-to-back seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
He’ll also be one of the highest paid coaches in the NHL this year, as he’s getting paid by the Penguins, along with the Rangers in 2025.
