An NHL insider has shared some bad news regarding Thatcher Demko’s status for the remainder of the 2025-26 season after suffering another injury earlier this month.
Earlier this week, when speaking with reporters about the Kiefer Sherwood trade, General Manager Patrik Allvin gave a bit of an update on Demko, saying that he’s still being evaluated and that they’re considering opinions from all over the world, with the hope that they’ll have some sort of answer regarding his injury in the near future.
“Well he’s still getting further evaluated here and some testing and once we have more information, I will give you guys more updates, but I don’t have an update on his status here as of today.” Allvin said.
When asked if surgery is going to be an option for Demko, Allvin added, “I think they’re going through, you know, taking opinions from other resources around the world to see where his status is and what needs to be done or not. So, I’m sure we’ll know more here hopefully by the end of the week.”
Insider shares bad news about Thatcher Demko’s status for rest of season
During Friday’s edition of Donnie & Dhali, NHL insider Rick Dhaliwal shared an update on Thatcher Demko and it’s something that no fan was hoping to hear.
According to Dhaliwal, he’s hearing that it’s sounding more likely than not that the Vancouver Canucks will need to shut Thatcher Demko down for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
“It sounds more and more like they’re probably going to shut him down.” Dhaliwal said.
With the injuries Thatcher Demko has gone through over the last few seasons, it’s tough to see him miss more time and when he returned from a month-long absence in December, he admitted it’s been frustrating.
“Any guy can go through and have a great summer and then get hurt. I am sitting there, you know, pretty much just beat myself up for a week. And you feel guilty and feel bummed out and pissed off and all those things. But it’s part of the game, and I can only control so much. At the end of the day, I know that I’m doing everything humanly possible, preparation-wise, education-wise. I have a great team that surrounds me and helps me do what I can to make sure that I’m ready to play. I’m the guy who feels it the most when things don’t turn out the way we want it to. But yeah, I’ve been working hard and ready to go.” Demko said last month according to Adam Kierszenblat of The Hockey News.
The best course of action for the Canucks, given that the playoffs are well out of reach, is to shut him down, get Demko surgery or to rehab the injury (whichever doctors suggest) and have him back at 100 percent health by the time training camp rolls around.
