J.T. Compher scored a pair of goals, John Gibson continued his remarkable run, and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 Saturday at Canada Life Centre.

The Red Wings (32-16-5, 69 points) earned five of a possible six points during this trip and moved one point ahead of Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division, though the Lightning have played three fewer games.

Gibson made 26 saves to improve to 17-2-0 in his past 19 starts.

The Red Wings scored four unanswered goals in the third period to snap a 1-1 tie.

Compher notched his second of the night and eighth of the season at 1:43. He caped a nice passing play with James van Riemsdyk and Emmitt Finnie during a three-on-two break. It proved to be the winning goal.

Lucas Raymond put Detroit ahead 3-1 at 8:11 by batting in a shot near the crossbar. It was his seventh goal in 10 games and 18th of the season.

Alex DeBrincat scored an empty-net goal, his 27th, with 1:49 remaining. Patrick Kane assisted on the play, moving him within one point of tying Mike Modano as the NHL’s all-time leading scorer among U.S.-born players.

Marco Kasper capped the scoring with his fifth goal with 1:17 remaining.

The Jets, who won the Presidents’ Trophy last season for the best overall record, dropped to 20-24-7 (47 points).

The Red Wings start a three-game homestand Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network).

Compher tied it at 1-1 at 15:50 of the second period. He banged the puck in off goaltender Connor Hellebuyck’s pad during a net-front scramble five seconds after a Red Wings power play expired.

Cole Koepke opened the scoring for Winnipeg at 10:08 of the second, firing the puck in from the net front after a shot from the point hit traffic.

Top-pair defenseman Simon Edvinsson missed his second game in a row due to a lower-body injury.
