The community arena being built as part of the Scotia Place development officially has a name.
During Sunday’s game between the Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks, the new 1,000-seat indoor community rink was officially christened the Esso Community Arena.
Set to open in 2027, the rink will be adjacent to Scotia Place, the new home of the Calgary Flames, Wranglers and Hitmen. The Esso Community Arena is being “designed to prioritize community access (and) the multi-use facility will support new and existing Flames Foundation programs as well as the broader Calgary community.”
It will also be used as a practice facility for the Flames, Hitmen and Wranglers.
“The Esso Community Arena will be a place where families come together, young athletes discover their love for hockey, and lifelong memories are made,” said Robert Hayes, President & CEO of Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation in a press release.
Along with Scotia Place, which is scheduled to open in time for the 2027-28 NHL season, there have also been announcements regarding plans for several hotels in the vicinity of the new arena, including a 320-room Autograph Collection by Truman and a W Calgary, which is being built through a partnership between Marriott and Truman.
