If the Detroit Red Wings win 15 of their final 29 games this season, they would have a 99% probability of ending their nine-year playoff drought.
That’s how playoffstatus.com sees the Detroit math moving forward.
Fifteen wins would give the Red Wings 99 points. Based on today’s numbers, playoff status gives Detroit a 90% chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Moneypuck.com has Detroit’s odds at 88.5%.
The Red Wings clearly aren’t focused on probability as they prepare for their final three home games before the Olympic break. They play the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, the Washington Capitals on Thursday, and the Colorado Avalanche in a Saturday matinee.
Oddly, the Red Wings don’t play a single home game in the month of February. They play next Monday in Denver to complete a home-and-home with the Avalanche and then head for a game in Utah on Wednesday, Feb. 4. After the Olympics, they resume the NHL schedule with a game Thursday, Feb. 26 at Ottawa and then finish the month with a road game Saturday, Feb. 28 at Carolina.
