The Calgary Flames have some tough choices to make.

They’ve already traded away Rasmus Andersson, but he was on an expiring contract, so there was really no other way to proceed there.

What about center Nazem Kadri, though?

He’s under contract through 2028-29.

He does have a sturdy $7 million cap hit, but he’s also still a strong contributor.

At 35 years old, Kadri certainly could be a guy to trade away, but it’s not a given.

Daily Faceoff writer Matt Larkin put Kadri in his second tier of trade candidates, ones he simply isn’t sure whether they’ll move or not.

“The classic conundrum for Flames GM Craig Conroy: even if you’re in the midst of a rebuild and have already traded most of your core over the past couple seasons…don’t you need a few veteran tone setters to hang around and teach the kids how to win?” Larkin writes. “That would be a reason to hold Kadri. But he could also command a significant return given his impact as a scorer and emotional leader. Now that the Habs landed Danault, would the Wild be the most logical place for Kadri to land? They have interest, reports Di Marco. Dallas could be a strong fit as well.”

The Wild have already been active in the trade market by bringing in Quinn Hughes, and getting Kadri too would be another big win.

The Stars find themselves perennially in contention and could always use another talented center.

It’ll most likely depend in the end on whether the Flames even want to deal Kadri. If they don’t, there’s not much else interested teams can do.
