The Montreal Canadiens have a bit of a logjam.

At the moment, they simply have too many goalies. That could lead to a trade before the NHL’s deadline.

And if a trade is coming, Sam Montembeault seems to be the most logical candidate to move.

Daily Faceoff writer Matt Larkin lists Montembeault on his trade big board as players possibly to be moved in the next month-plus.

Montembeault has a cap hit of $3.15 million and is under contract through the end of the 2026-27 season.

The 29-year old netminder once was believed to be a promising young goalie, but he’s never quite lived up to the potential.

“Yes, he was always keeping the seat warm for Jacob Fowler, but we all thought Montembeault had a lot more time, right?” Larkin writes. “His game went in the toilet this season, costing him an Olympic roster spot with Canada and earning him a conditioning stint with AHL Laval last month. He’s back with the big club now and trying to recapture his game, but a three-goalie battery feels crowded, and Montembeault has showcased sufficient upside to warrant another team taking a chance on him.”

Goalie is one of those positions that you don’t need until you need it.

Montembeault’s chances of getting traded could depend on what happens in the next handful of weeks. If injuries or ineffectiveness pop up, he could become more in demand. And if Montreal gets a chance to make such a deal, it might be a logical trade to pursue.
