The month of January has been jam-packed with 240 NHL games across the month ahead of the Olympic break, which spans from February 6-24. During the first 26 days of January, the league has seen a record-tying 27 hat tricks; the previous record was 26 hat tricks in 26 days in March of 1996.

These 27 hat tricks make up just less than half of the 58 hat tricks across the NHL so far this season.

Fun facts
The back-to-back hat trick games between Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm is the first time that two defencemen have recorded back-to-back hat tricks in NHL history. There were four first career hat tricks, those came from: Justin Sourdif, Pavel Zacha, Beckett Sennecke, and Mattias Ekholm. January 1st and January 6th each saw two hat tricks in separate games.

The teams that did not see a hat trick this month are: the Seattle Kraken, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils, Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Vancouver Canucks.

With four days and 43 games left in the month of January, there is plenty of room for few more hat tricks, and given the rate at which they’ve been scored so far, don’t be surprised if there are more by the end of the month.
