The LA Kings (21-16-13) visit the Detroit Red Wings (32-16-5) Tuesday. Puck drop from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, is set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Kings vs. Red Wings odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.
Season series: Red Wings lead 1-0 after a 4-3 shootout win Oct. 30 in Los Angeles as +120 dogs with the Over (5.5) hitting.
The Kings outlasted the St. Louis Blues 5-4 in a shootout Saturday win as -152 road favorites. RW Alex Laferriere scored his 13th goal of the season while LW Trevor Moore scored a tiebreaking goal in the third period before netting the shootout winner in his first game in nearly a month. The Kings, who are typically anemic offensively (28th in the league with 2.6 goals per game), have scored 8 goals (excluding the shootout) in their last 2, albeit against bad defensive teams.
The Red Wings took down the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 as +105 road dogs Saturday. RW Alex DeBrincat scored his 27th goal of the season while LW J.T. Compher netted a pair. Detroit is 8-1-1 over its last 10 and sits 1 point out of the top spot in the Atlantic Division.

Darcy Kuemper (13-9-9, 2.56 GAA, .902 SV%, 2 SO) vs. John Gibson (21-9-1, 2.62 GAA, .906 SV%, 3 SO)
Kuemper bends but doesn’t break too often. He fractured in the 5-4 shootout win over the Blues on Saturday, stopping 25 of 29. He has allowed 2+ goals in all 10 January starts. He stopped 24 of 27 in the 4-3 shootout loss to Detroit on Oct. 30.
The 32-year-old Gibson is having a renaissance season with his best GAA since 2017-18. He was big in Saturday’s 5-1 win over the Jets, stopping 26 of 27. He has a miniscule 1.76 GAA in 9 January starts. He stopped 16 of 18 shots in his most recent outing against the Kings, a 2-1 loss in November of 2024 while Gibson was with the Anaheim Ducks.
Kings at Red Wings picks and predictionsPrediction
Red Wings 4, Kings 2
Detroit has the edge for me. The Wings have scored 4+ goals in 7 of their last 10. While the Kings have also hit that mark against St. Louis and the New York Rangers the last 2 games, Detroit is 13th with 2.96 goals allowed per game with a white-hot goalie.
Take RED WINGS (-125).
This is tempting, and we’re projecting a multi-goal finish, but buyer beware here. Though the Kings struggle to score consistently, they have a great trap defense. If you’re relying on an empty-netter, the Red Wings have scored just once with the cage empty while the Kings have allowed only 7 empty-net goals, tied for fifth fewest. Still, sprinkle RED WINGS -1.5 (+195).
The Wings are 4-4-2 O/U in their last 10 while the Kings are 6-4. The Over trends even more favorably head-to-head, sitting at 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between the teams.
Take OVER 5.5 (-105).
