Emil Pieniniemi is out of Wheeling. The Pittsburgh Penguins’ prospect defenseman, who left the organization rather than report to the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers out of training camp, only to return in December, was promoted Tuesday.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins recalled Pieniniemi and reassigned David Breazeale to Wheeling.

In 10 games for Wheeling, Pieniniemi registered four points, including two goals. The 2023 third-round pick has two penalty minutes and is a plus-3.
This week, the Penguins organization also recalled Melvin Fernstrom from his Swedish organization. The Penguins loaned Fernstrom to the Orebro HK of the Swedish High League, but he had been demoted to the second-tier AIK after registering four points (3-1-4) in 36 games.
According to Inside AHL reporter Tony Androckitis, Fernstrom was expected to join the WBS Penguins this week.
