VOORHEES, N.J. – After the Philadelphia Flyers’ 4-0 shutout loss vs. the New York Islanders on Monday, they held a quick but intense practice ahead of their two-game road trip, which starts on Wednesday.

The Flyers ran a good practice, with what looked like full-effort drills, and a non-optional skate. Everyone was accounted for.

For a good portion of practice, the Flyers ran 2-on-2 drills that were uber-competitive. The drill started in the neutral zone, and the two pairs would race to the corner, get into puck battles, then the winning team would try to score. The drill was going on at both ends.

This is where the practice’s competitive nature came from. The players were going 100% in this drill. Obviously, there was nothing crazy, but guys were checking and playing hard in the corners – an element not typical at practice.

Other drills included typical line rushes, which is where we saw a small shakeup.

Flyers lines & pairs at practice

Forwards

Zegras–Dvorak–Konecny
Michkov–Cates–Brink
Barkey–Couturier–Tippett
Grundtsrom–Pederson–Grebenkin/Hathaway

Defensemen

Sanheim–Ristolainen
York–Drysdale
Seeler–Juulsen
Andrae–Deslauriers

The forward lines remained the same, with Nikita Grebenkin and Garnet Hathaway each rotating in on the fourth line. From the look of things, it did seem like Grebenkin was getting the bulk of the work, which could indicate that he will remain in the lineup. We will know more by Wednesday.

As for the defense, it looks like a major shakeup is on the way. This has happened before, followed by Tocchet playing the typical pairs in an actual game. It’s worth keeping in mind that this could have been some practice tinkering to see if he likes this.

However, the past few games have not been great showings from Emil Andrae, making mistakes that are not abnormal for a young player. It seems like he could be bound for the press box in Columbus, and the d-pairs are getting a new look.

If this sticks, I will be very excited to watch Cam York and Jamie Drysdale, both of whom have taken great steps forward this season. They both have some high-upside offensive potential, and Drysdale has settled into a really strong defensive role as well.

Injury update

After some time where the Flyers have been banged up, they are nearing healthy once again, with Tyson Foerster and Rodrigo Abols, both of whom are expected to be out for some time, being the only injured Flyers.

That full health mark comes with Dan Vladar, who practiced with the Flyers once again as he is nearing his return.

Vladar looked to be a full participant at practice. Since he is still on IR for the time being, Aleksei Kolosov was at the Flyers Training Center for practice. However, with Vladar expected to play on the road trip, it would not shock me if a move came soon.
