ROCHESTER — Rochester Mayo jumped out to a big lead against visiting Coulee Region on Tuesday at Graham Arena 4, then held off a big push by the Cyclones to earn a 5-3 non-conference girls hockey victory.

Mayo led 3-0 after one period, then 4-3 after two periods.

The Spartans never trailed, scoring the first four goals of the game, though the Cyclones scored three in a row to pull within one late in the second period.

Amelia Ranfranz ensured Coulee Region didn’t pull even — or take the lead — by making 28 saves.

Maggie Weick, Marley Smith and Taylor Kurtz scored in the opening period for Mayo, then Smith scored again 2:21 into the second period, the goal that turned out to be the game winner.

Sydney Cichosz, Julia Hendrickson and Ellie Hoehn all scored in a 10-minute stretch to get the Cyclones back within one.

That’s how the score remained down to the final seconds, until Olivia Dahl sealed the win with a goal with 20 seconds to play.

Mayo (12-8-2 overall) hosts Black River Falls (Wis.) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

NORTHFIELD — Northfield scored the game’s first four goals and held Rochester Century/John Marshall scoreless on 10 power-play opportunities Tuesday night in a 5-2 Big Nine Conference girls hockey victory at Northfield Ice Arena.

Northfield led 2-0 after one period and 3-0 after two.

Emma Peroutka scored two goals for the Raiders, while Reese Peroutka scored a short-handed goal and added three assists for a four-point game. Reese Peroutka’s short-handed tally came early in the third and made it a 4-0 game.

Century/JM answered with a goal from Pagie Conners 21 seconds later, then a goal from Quinn Stewart five minutes after that, to pull within 4-2. That’s as close as the Panthers would come, though, as Northfield’s Olivia Simon added an insurance goal with just fewer than two minutes to play.

Isabella Scranton stopped 32 shots for the Panthers, while Belle Torgeson made 11 saves for Northfield.

Northfield (12-0-0 Big Nine, 15-8-1 overall) has clinched at least a share of the Big Nine title. The Raiders can win it outright by beating or tying Mankato East (10-1-0, 20-2-1) on Thursday, or with a Mankato East loss to Mayo on Saturday.

Century/JM dropped to 6-9-1 in the Big Nine and 10-13-2 overall. The Panthers are now off until next Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the quarterfinals of the Section 1, Class 2A playoffs.
