The Philadelphia Flyers (24-18-9) were lifeless at home on Monday, being shut out 4-0 by the New York Islanders (28-19-5) at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Mathew Barzal, and Tony DeAngelo scored for the Islanders.

With the exception of guys like Matvei Michkov, Owen Tippett, Noah Cates, and Danver Barkey, the Flyers seemed lifeless on Monday. Mix that with facing a hot goalie and a team that capitalizes on mistakes, and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Here is how we got to the final score.

Islanders pull ahead fast

There was not much going on in Monday’s first period. It was a much lower event than the Flyers had been used to, especially recently.

Three power-play opportunities were given, two for the Flyers and one for the Islanders. Noah Cates got two minutes for holding, but Philly was able to kill it off. New York’s first penalty was on Maxim Tsyplakov, who was killed off.

The second power play was courtesy of a Marc Gatacomb holding penalty; the Flyers did not score, but the Islanders did.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau flipped a puck to clear the neutral zone, and it came in on goal and took a bounce off Sam Ersson. Jamie Drysdale and Bobby Brink were going back, but sort of slowly, and did not see Casey Cizikas (8), who came in, and found Pageau (9) in the slot, and he buried the short-handed goal, putting the Islanders up 1-0.

Nothing else happened in the first period, but the second continued in the Islanders’ favor. Isiah George (1) sent in a shot on goal, and Mathew Barzal (12) was there to tip it in the score. Just 5:41 into the second period, the Islanders pulled ahead 2-0.

The bleeding did not stop there.

Following a Cam York tripping penalty, Philly was back on the penalty kill. Owen Tippett broke off a short-handed breakaway, but could not get a clean look. He passed back to Emil Andrae, who misplayed the puck at the blueline and eventually lost it to Anthony Duclair.

Duclair (13) found Barzal (31), who set up Tony DeAngelo (4) on a tee for the one-timer, putting the Islanders up 3-0 with 7:10 to go in the first.

After 40 minutes, the Flyers led shots 15-14, but trailed 3-0 heading into the third period.

Flyers lifeless to end the game

The third period did not go much better for the Flyers.

After an Owen Tippett high-sticking penalty, the Islanders were back on the power play, which the Flyers were able to kill off. However, they did not keep the sheet clean.

On the rush, Anders Lee (18) found Tysplakov (1), and the Flyers’ defense crashed into Tysplakov along the boards. That left Pageau (10) wide open, who scored his second of the game and put the Islanders up 4-0.

The Flyers would not score, and the Islanders held on for the shutout win. Ilya Sorokin finished the night with a perfect 21 saves vs. the Flyers.

What’s next

Just like that, the Flyers are back on the road for a short back-to-back, starting on Wednesday in Columbus vs. the Blue Jackets, with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. EST.
