NHL rumors & news
Let’s start with a pair of extensions.
Colorado Hockey Now: On Tuesday evening, the Colorado Avalanche locked up defenseman Sam Malinski for four more years with an extension. Malinski was a pending UFA who will now get $4.75 million a season in his new deal. Aarif Deen has the latest in Malinski’s extension.
Detroit News: Another defenseman has been locked up, this one coming on Wednesday morning. The Detroit Red Wings have agreed on a three-year extension with defenseman Ben Chiarot, worth $11.55 million total for three years.
New Jersey Hockey Now: A bit of some unexpected news from Tuesday. The Devils held forward Ondrej Palat out of Tuesday’s game for roster management purposes, signaling a trade was near. Palat has been in rumors for quite some time, but a no-trade list has limited what the Devils could do. Now, he is Long Island Bounce. The Islanders boost their veteran depth while the Devils clear the much-needed cap space. James Nichols has the latest on the deal.
The Athletic ($): Christ Johnston has updated his NHL trade board, this time to 5.0. Once again, no Flyers made the list. However, a potential Flyers trade target has joined the list and is ranked quite high. Another potential trade target has made a 10-spot jump from the prior position. Check out Johnston’s trade board.
Forever Blueshirts: The retool is on in New York, and it seems like there is no limit to what the Rangers might do. That could include trading the 24-year-old Alexis Lafreniere, who is in just year one of a seven-year deal. Jim Cerny writes about the Rangers’ “appetite” to trade the young winger.
SportsNet: Maybe they miss Mitch Marner more than they thought they would? The Toronto Maple Leafs are having a downright disappointing season, and their latest homestand proves it. With the decision clock ticking, Luke Fox writes that it’s time for the Leafs to sell, recoup, and restart next season.
