The Edmonton Oilers are on a two game win-streak, and look to be experimenting with their depth options within the system. First, Quinn Hutson, then Isaac Howard, and now Josh Samanski are getting their opportunities to crack the lineup.
Let’s look at everything Edmonton Oilers.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.
What to expect out of Josh Samanski’s call up
Samanski has found moderate success in his AHL rookie season as a prototypical two-way forward with physicality and playmaking upside. Across 39 appearances with Bakersfield, the German forward has netted seven goals and 21 assists, and currently stands at fourth among his team in scoring.
With the Oilers sending Isaac Howard back down to Bakersfield, that sends the message that they want a player with a more complete game in their bottom six. That’s exactly where Samanski fits in. The 23-year-old forward employs a heavy physicality, with moderate skating, and defensive orientated senses.
In his season with Bakersfield so far, Samanski has shown more growth in his puck skills that allow for more consistent playmaking, better vision, and generally decent passing ability. The German forward certainly won’t be scoring a hat-trick a night, but his skillset won’t allow for any soft goals either.
Expect Samanski to play the role of a tough physical checking-forward that will likely be used to lock down other teams’ secondary scoring lines. It’s even possible that Samanski could be used by Coach Kris Knoblauch and company in a penalty killing role in a pinch.
Also expect Samanski to get a couple of games to show management and the coaching staff exactly what they have in him.
