Some new information has been released about the specific injury that Vancouver Canucks defenseman Zeev Buium is dealing with and how long he’ll be out for.

One word that the Vancouver Canucks and their fans are sick of hearing is injuries as they’ve become a big issue for the organization from the moment training camp opened back in September.

Defenseman Derek Forbort and goaltender Thatcher Demko are done for the remainder of the regular season, while others, including rookie blueliner Zeev Buium and forward Marco Rossi should be back in the near future.

“Best case scenario is, I think, a week, maybe two weeks. But that’s upon further review. Getting through all the medical work to see what’s going on there. That was a scary injury. There’s still some evaluating, but I think minimally, you’re thinking 10 days to two weeks.” TSN’s Darren Dreger said on Monday about Zeev Buium’s injury.

New information comes out about specific injury Zeev Buium is dealing with

In a social media post on Tuesday, TSN reporter Farhan Lalji revealed that Zeev Buium has a fracture, potentially to his cheek bone, and while the blueliner will have a second opinion soon, the plan at the moment is to not undergo surgery.

Lalji went on to add that Buium is expected to miss two weeks, which will put him on track for a return to the lineup when the NHL resumes play after the 2026 Winter Olympics, which for the Vancouver Canucks is Wednesday, February 25th against the Winnipeg Jets.

“Buium does have a fracture. Possibly cheekbone. No surgery yet but 2nd opinion coming. Possibly 2 weeks, back after Olympic break.” Lalji said on X.

Thankfully the Canucks have just four games remaining until the Olympic break and that Zeev Buium will have more time than needed to recover and get back to 100 percent health for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

However, Buium’s absence over the next four games will be noticeable, it was the case during their 5-2 loss to Macklin Celebrini and the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.

While, yes, the Canucks have indicated that they’re entering a rebuild and wins don’t matter too much to the organization at the moment as they want that first overall pick, you still want to see that high effort level from the team night in and night out and they’re going to need several blueliners to step up over the next week in Buium’s absence.
