A rival of the Vancouver Canucks has been named as a potential landing spot for forward Elias Pettersson, whose name has in the thick of trade rumors recently.
Trade rumors around the National Hockey League are heating up, especially for the Vancouver Canucks, who are entering a rebuild after a difficult season thus far that has them in last place in the NHL.
“We are transitioning into a rebuild here, acquiring younger players through the draft. Obviously, the draft is really important for us. Since Jim and I got [here] three years ago, we’ve definitely always emphasized on getting younger.” General Manager Patrik Allvin said.
While a full-on fire sale is probably unlikely, the Canucks are expected to make their fair share of trades leading up for 12 p.m. PT on Friday, March 6th and one player to keep an eye on is Elias Pettersson, who was reportedly made available to teams around the league earlier this month.
“Obviously, every club in the National Hockey League has untouchables, but management of the Vancouver Canucks is now using the rebuild word, so they have to be open for business, open for just about anything, and that might include finally trading Elias Pettersson.” TSN’s Darren Dreger said.

“From the Canucks perspective, the fit is easy to envision. Vancouver has struggled immensely to find talented, young centres who can stay healthy. Betting on a 22-year-old who can grow into a top-six role also fits in with how the organization has operated of late. Call it a hybrid retool, if you will.” Beggs said about the potential for Vancouver to add Shane Wright in an Elias Pettersson trade with Seattle.
A trade involving Elias Pettersson before March 6th is far from a guarantee at this point, especially with how high his salary is and the term remaining on his contract as there aren’t many teams that can take that on fully, nor would the Canucks have much of an appetite to retain money.
A lot can change between now and March 6th, but it certainly feels like if the Vancouver Canucks and Elias Pettersson believe it would be best to go their separate ways, a trade in the offseason would be much easier to complete.
