Travis Konecny’s hat trick was not enough for the Philadelphia Flyers (24-19-9) as they lost 5-3 to the Columbus Blue Jackets (25-20-7) Wednesday night at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Travis Konecny scored for the Flyers. Charlie Coyle, Kirill Marchenko, Erik Gudbranson, Kent Johnson, and Mathieu Olivier scored for the Blue Jackets.

Travis Konecny and Dan Vladar played great games for the Philadelphia Flyers, but the Blue Jackets were able to take advantage of Philadelphia’s mistakes. Especially when the Flyers were out of position.

Here is how we got to the final score.

The Columbus cannon fires early

The Columbus Blue Jackets scored 8 against the Tampa Bay Lightning in their last game. It took just 38 seconds for the cannon to fire at Nationwide Arena on Wednesday.

On just the first shot of the game, Charlie Coyle (12) beat Dan Vladar following a bad Trevor Zegras pass, who was trying to get the puck to Christian Dvorak to clear the zone. It was the first shot on goal Vladar saw since returning from injury.

Just under 9 minutes into the game, the Flyers got their first shot of the game after Bobby Brink sprung Matvei Michkov on a breakaway. Michkov could not beat Elvis Merzlinkins, but they did score on the next shot.

On just their second shot of the game, Travis Konecny (18) beats Merzlinkins, assisted by Cam York (18) and Noah Juulsen (8), tying the game at 1.

Later, the Flyers had a great chance on the power play, looking lethal. Zegras had a couple of great looks, including one that hit iron. Unfortunately for Philadelphia, their man-advantage chance was cut short following a too-many men on the ice penalty.

Adam Fantilli (21) found Zach Werenski (38), who beat Owen Tippett in a battle along the boards. Werenski found Kirill Marchenko (19) on the other side of the net, who put the one-timer past Vladar, putting Columbus up 2-1 going into the first intermission.

Konecny’s hat trick ties it up for the Flyers, but not for long

Since their second goal came at four-on-four, the Blue Jackets still had a chance on the power play later on. The Flyers were able to kill off the remainder of the penalty. However, the Blue Jackets still extended their lead.

Right after an offensive zone draw, Erik Gudbranson (1) scored his first of the season with a blast from the point. Coyle (23) won the draw, Cole Sillinger (16) received it, and set up the Gudbranson score. Early in the second period, the Flyers were trailing 3-1.

The Flyers, once again, had a chance to do some damage on the power play. The Zegras unit, made up of Zegras, Dvorak, Brink, Konecny, and York, was out to start and was dangerous. But, once again, no goal, and the Flyers still trailed 3-1.

That was the score when the third period opened.

An early Christian Dvorak tripping penalty put the Blue Jackets back on the power play. Adam Fantili had a for-sure goal, but was robbed by the glove of Dan Vladar, keeping the score at 3-1.

The Flyers took advantage of Vladar’s game-saving stop, as Konecny (19) came crashing in from the slot, scoring his second of the game, making it a 3-2 game. Christian Dvorak (21) and Jamie Drysadle (18) assisted the score.

Vladar did it again, making another show-stopping save for the Flyers, keeping it a one-goal game.

With just under eight minutes to play, Philadelphia had a power-play opportunity with a chance to tie the game. Columbus did a good job clogging the middle and kept it a one-goal game.

That did not stop the Flyers from tying it up. Who else, but Travis Konecny?

Travis Sanheim (17) sent a seed to the back door for Konecny (20), who buried the score for his third-career hat trick, and tied the game at three.

Dan Vladar could not be Superman for his team again. Sean Monahan (9) was all alone just in front of the crease and put Columbus back up 4-3, with assists from Damon Severson (17) and Kent Johnson (11).

Mathieu Olivier (5) scored on the empty net, sealing the 5-3 win for the Blue Jackets.
