One of the best players in the world is coming to Hockeytown on Thursday night, as Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals get set to take on the Detroit Red Wings.
Ovechkin will certainly go down as one of the greatest players to ever lace up his skates. He broke Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals in a single career last season, and he continues to pad the record books this year in the nation’s capital. The Russian sniper has scored 22 goals this season, totaling 919 in his career so far.
However, his Capitals are not nearly as strong as they were last season, when they finished the regular season with the best record in the Eastern Conference. As of now, Washington sits fifth in the Metropolitan Division, five points back of the last Wild Card spot.
The Red Wings are back home this week for a trio of home games. They have been one of the best teams on home ice this season. It has been a key part of Detroit’s success thus far, and why the team remains near the top of the Atlantic Division for most of the season.
So far, the Wings are 18-9-1 at LCA, one of four teams in the NHL at this point to have reached that many victories on home ice this season. Detroit has been solid on the road as well, but the way it has racked up points in its own barn has been huge for helping the team creep toward its first Stanley Cup Playoff berth in a decade.
