A National Hockey League insider reveals the odds of the Vancouver Canucks trading away star forward Elias Pettersson before the deadline on Friday, March 6th.

“Obviously, every club in the National Hockey League has untouchables, but management of the Vancouver Canucks is now using the rebuild word, so they have to be open for business, open for just about anything, and that might include finally trading Elias Pettersson. Now, we know that there’s been a ton of speculation from a media perspective on Pettersson’s future with the Vancouver Canucks. That was more into the off-season, more last season than to this point.” TSN’s Darren Dreger said.

Standing in the Vancouver Canucks’ way is the no-movement clause given to Elias Pettersson as part of his eight-year contract, which also comes with an $11.6 million cap hit and so far, it doesn’t feel like the Sundsvall, Sweden native is too keen on leaving the Lower Mainland.

Insider reveals odds of Vancouver Canucks trading Elias Pettersson before deadline

Trading Elias Pettersson would be a difficult task because not many teams can take on his full $11.6 million salary and while the Canucks still have two retention spots available, they’d be better off using those on Evander Kane and Teddy Blueger ahead of the deadline.

With that said, it doesn’t look like an Elias Pettersson trade is coming anytime soon, with NHL insider Darren Dreger of TSN revealing on Sekeres and Price earlier this week that he thinks it’s unlikely the Canucks will be able to move him, partly due to his contract.

“Re Elias Pettersson trade odds: I’d put him in a category of unlikely; you’ve gotta have a partner to make a trade like that with a contract like that, and it seems unlikely at this stage.” Darren Dreger said.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Vancouver Canucks manage to find a team that is willing to trade for Elias Pettersson, the club could receive a decent return with a first round pick and top prospect not out of the question, both of which would help the club in a massive way amid their rebuild.

While an Elias Pettersson trade might be unlikely before the deadline, perhaps something could get done on this front in the offseason when teams around the league have a better picture of what their salary cap outlook will be.
