DETROIT — Red Wings forward Patrick Kane assisted on defenseman Ben Chiarot’s goal at 9:52 of the second period to set a new NHL record of 1,375 by a U.S.-born player. The goal tied the Washington-Detroit game 1-1.

The Buffalo native Kane passed Michigan native Mike Modano who had 1,374 points from 1988 to 2011. Modano played his final season for the Red Wings in 2010-11.

Kane appeared to have the record early in the first period when he had an obvious assist on an apparent goal by Alex DeBrincat. But the goal was erased because Patrick Kane was found to be offside on the coach’s challenge.
