Big night for Patrick Kane and a frustrating one for his Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings wanted to revel around Kane’s record-setting night and their ability to pick up a point thanks to Alex DeBrincat’s two goals with less than two minutes to go in regulation. But the fact that they didn’t play well enough to earn two points gnaws at them.

Even though the Red Wings have played better than expected this season, they cannot afford to lose points that are there for the taking.

With the Tampa Bay Lightning beating Winnipeg 4-1 Thursday, coach Jon Cooper’s team now has a two-point lead over Detroit for first place in Atlantic Division. Plus, the Lightning, 16-1-1 in their last 18 games, have three games in hand.

More importantly, Eastern Conference contenders Montreal, New Jersey, Carolina, Pittsburgh and the New York Islanders all won Thursday night.

It means the Red Wings are only six points from being out of the playoffs.

The Red Wings may be a team now waiting for their GM to make a move to bolster their roster through a trade.

How many more points can 37-year-old Patrick Kane add to his record?

With less than a week left before the NHL Olympic trade freeze, the Red Wings are looking at some trade targets on defense.

Coach Todd McLellan plans on emptying the players tanks over these next three games.

DeBrincat is in the midst of his second-consecutive 30-goal season and fifth of his NHL career. He is the fourth different Red Wings player over the last 20 years to record consecutive 30 goal seasons, joining Dylan Larkin (4 from 2021-22 to 2024-25), Henrik Zetterberg (4 from 2005-06 to 2008-09) and Pavel Datsyuk (2 from 2007-08 to 2008-09).

“There’s some guys that always have a chance to score a goal,” McLellan said. “He’s one of them.”
