UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Philadelphia Flyers prospects Proter Martone and Shane Vansaghi took on the No. 5-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions as the No. 2-ranked Michigan State Spartans came to Hockey Valley, and came away with the 6-3 win at Pegula Ice Arena on Friday.

With the two Flyers prospects playing not too far away at Penn State, I made the trip to watch the pair of Flyers 2025 draft picks play. Here

Porter Martone had a three-point night – a point in each period. He had the secondary assist on the Spartans’ third goal of the first period, as well as a net-front goal in the second, and a primary assist on an empty-netter to cap off the night.

Martone looked to be, well, everything the Flyers need right now; He was all over the puck. Oftentimes, Martone was driving to the net. During sustained possessions, he was working his way to the net-front. On the power play, he started on the left flank, but worked his way to the net-front role. Martone was looking for the puck at all times. His three-point night was well earned.

Martone is a pest on the ice as well. He certainly can stir things up. There were many scrums, including one that got both Cayden Lindstrom and Gavin McKenna ejected. For the most part, it looked like Martone was involved in plenty. But hey, no penalties for him on Friday.

Shane Vansaghi made a good impression

Shane Vansaghi came as advertised. No, he is not going to light up the scoresheet with goals and assists. But Vansaghi will play a heavy, physical, mature game, one that already looks pro-ready.

To me, Vansaghi’s best shift of the night came with just under five minutes to play. Michigan State was up 4-3, and Penn State was buzzing, as for the first time all game, they were truly in it. Vansaghi came in and was all over the puck. He was physical on both ends of the ice, disruptive in the neutral zone, and really flying to the puck.

It’s those disruptive shifts that make me think he could fill that same energy line role for the Flyers right now.

Next, Michigan State will finish its series vs. Penn State with an outdoor game on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
