The Detroit Red Wings’ own Elmer Soderblom was laid out in a monstrous hit from Alex Ovechkin: he could be facing discipline for the reckless hit.

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin may be facing discipline in the near future after his monstrous hit on the Detroit Red Wings’ Elmer Soderblom.

The veteran forward made his presence known, laying the boom on the 6-foot-8 Soderblom, who had just passed the puck. While Soderblom had his back turned, Ovechkin laid into him and looked to have cross-checked him on his back.

While a physical presence is always appreciated in a battle of wills, the Capitals and Ovechkin might have to pay a handsome price, depending upon how George Parros and the Department of Player Safety judge the hit after all is said and done.

Parros should treat him as a repeat offender.

What kind of discipline will Alex Ovechkin face for his crushing hit on the Detroit Red Wings’ Elmer Soderblom?

Alex Ovechkin is a complete player. Offering not only scoring prowess but an old-school physical style of play that coaches and general managers love.

This injustice shouldn’t go unanswered by the DOPS, though, as his reckless hit happened after Soderblom parted with the puck.

It should’ve been a minor penalty to start the process of discipline down the road, but for now, it appears they’re letting Ovechkin run free to help hype up the Capitals bench tonight.

It’s near the end of the 2nd, and the Red Wings and Capitals are tied 1-1.
