Hundreds of hockey players laced up their skates and braved the frigid cold Friday for the New England Pond Hockey Classic.

Temperatures hovered around 10 degrees, while the wind chill made it feel below zero, but that didn’t stop nearly 300 teams from taking part in the event.

More than 500 games were scheduled for this weekend across 26 rinks on Meredith Bay for players of all age groups.

While spectators might be cold watching the games, the players said they were skating around so much that the cold wasn’t bothering them.

“The wind is rough out here, but this is what it’s all about: backyard hockey,” one player said.
