So far, the San Jose Sharks’ road trip is going okay. The team would have liked to get that extra point in Central Alberta, but three out of four potential points is a good way to start things off. This afternoon, the Sharks have a chance to make some headway in the playoff race with a win over the Calgary Flames. While it’s a bit early to be standings watching, here’s where the Sharks stand as of this morning.

While San Jose is outside looking in, today is one of those games in hand against Anaheim, so San Jose could leapfrog the Ducks. Meantime, the Utah Mammoth are playing the Dallas Stars, and the Seattle Kraken are playing the Vegas Golden Knights, which means the Sharks have the very real possibility of jumping all the way to third in the Pacific Division with a win today. Just something to think about as you’re scoreboard watching today.
So, let’s talk about the team on the other side of the ice. The Calgary Flames are only a bit better than the 32nd-place Vancouver Canucks. The Flames are 31st in the league with a 21-26-6 record. Calgary is 3-5-2 in its last ten games and has lost five in a row, most recently losing 4-1 to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.
This is the third time these two teams have met this season. The Flames won the first meeting 2-0 on Nov. 13, but the Sharks got revenge on Dec. 16, defeating Calgary 6-3. They’ll meet one more time, after the Olympic break.
The Flames have traded away one of the team’s biggest assets since the last time these two teams played. Calgary sent Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Zach Whitecloud, Abram Wiebe, a 2027 first-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick that becomes a first if the Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup this year. Whitecloud is expected to play for the Flames today.
Scoring has been an issue for the Flames this season. Nazem Kadri leads the team with 35 points in 53 games. Mikael Backlund is close behind with 32 points. Matt Coronato leads the team with 14 goals.
In the net for the Flames is the Bay Area duo of Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley. Wolf is 15-20-3 with a .896 save percentage. Cooley is 6-6-3 with a .921 save percentage.
The good news for the Sharks is that the Flames have one of the worst power plays in the NHL. Operating at a 15.5% success rate, that’s good for 30th in the league. Since the Sharks’ penalty kill is getting eaten alive lately and is currently ranked 22nd in the league with a 77.8% kill rate, a go-around with the Flames might be a good confidence builder for the Sharks.
San Jose Sharks lines today
For the Sharks, the big question is whether Kiefer Sherwood will be ready to play or not. The team placed Vincent Iorio on waivers yesterday. We presume it was to make room for either Phillip Kurashev, Sherwood and Shakir Mukhamadullin as they return from injury. Sherwood’s been in full practice with the Sharks so he’s pretty darn close. San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng reports Kurashev and Mukhamadullin will play today.
