In the midst of the Chicago Blackhawks getting their rear ends handed to them by the Pittsburgh Penguins, Patrick Kane made history in the second period of the Detroit Red Wings’ matchup with the Washington Capitals on Thursday.
With the secondary assist on Ben Chiarot’s game-tying goal at 9:52, Kane officially surpassed Mike Modano for the most points by an American-born player in NHL history. Kane collected his 1,375th career point, putting him one ahead of Modano for the U.S. scoring record.
The entire Red Wings’ bench poured onto the ice to congratulate Kane for the remarkable achievement. The cameras also captured reactions from Kane’s parents, sisters, and his five-year-old son, Patrick Kane III, who were all in attendance at Little Caesars Arena to witness the feat.
After the on-ice celebrations commenced, the Red Wings shared a video on the Jumbotron of Modano congratulating Kane and commending him for his influence on hockey in the United States.
Kane, 37, recorded 1,225 of his 1,375 points as a member of the Blackhawks from 2007-2023, scoring 446 goals and adding 779 assists in 1,161 games. Selected first overall in the 2007 NHL Draft, Kane helped turn around the franchise and will go down as one of the greatest athletes in Chicago sports history.
He led Chicago to three Stanley Cups, won the Conn Smyth Trophy in 2013, was the 2015-16 Art Ross and Hart Trophy winner, and got named as one of the NHL’s 100 Greatest Players in the league’s first 100 years in 2017, among many more outstanding accomplishments. Add it all up, and “Showtime” is a sure-fire first-ballot Hall-of-Famer when it’s all said and done.
Many already believed it to be the case, but now it’s officially set in stone. Patrick Kane, the greatest American that’s ever laced ’em up in the National Hockey League.
