Connor McMichael will be out for some crucial upcoming games.
Saturday, in his pregame press conference with reporters, Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery revealed that McMichael is out week-to-week due to an upper-body injury.
The Capitals placed both McMichael and defenseman Matt Roy on injured reserve on Saturday morning.
“Mikey’s week-to-week, upper body, so he’ll be out through the (Olympic) break, obviously,” Carbery said. “And then Roy’s day-to-day, lower-body.”
McMichael, who has recorded 31 points (8g, 23a) in 55 games this season, played in all six games of the Capitals’ West Coast road trip, but missed the final 8:18 of regulation and all of overtime against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. The 25-year-old forward had an assist and 16:17 of ice time in the 4-3 shootout win.
Carbery confirmed to Monumental Sports Network’s Tarik El-Bashir that McMichael was injured on a cross-check at the tail end of a Capitals power play during the third period.
The Capitals have not officially announced any recalls from the Hershey Bears, but Bogdan Trineyev is now listed as a Capital on the NHL media site, indicating he’ll be McMichael’s replacement on the roster. Washington is figuring out its goaltending situation, as both Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren may be too injured to play.
In McMichael’s case, Carbery said multiple players will need to step up to fill the young star’s various roles.
“We’re going to need it through penalty kill, power play, five-on-five,” Carbery said. “It’ll be different guys in different situations so leaning on potentially Sonny Milano; power-play wise Frankie (Ethen Frank) to move up a line and move him with that Dowd line. There’s a lot of things that Mikey brings inside our lineup that we’ll just need other guys to pick up the slack.”
McMichael’s injury comes during an important time for the Capitals. After the Capitals play the Metropolitan Division-leading Carolina Hurricanes tonight, they then close out their pre-Olympics schedule with a back-to-back Monday and Tuesday against the New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers, who are both near them in the standings. They then host the Nashville Predators on Thursday.
“I think our guys are mature enough to know that injuries are part of the season and they’re gonna happen,” Carbery said. “If you’re going to sit there and you feel sorry for yourselves, you focus on you’re missing this guy, this guy, this guy, this guy, it’s counterproductive and you’re wasting your time. Find a way to dig in and win one hockey game, not 10, not 8, just one hockey game at home.
“And then even go further than that, focus on how I can have a good shift here and have a productive period and try to do the things we need to do as a group and our guys are confident. It’s not one person, it’s not two people, we’re a team here whether it’s callup guys, different goaltenders playing, doesn’t matter. We feel confident that we can get the job done no matter the circumstance and no matter the injuries that mounts up.”
