Iorio’s waiver was the roster move the Sharks made, with Shakir Mukhamadullin and Philipp Kurashev returning to the lineup. To activate both players off injured reserve, a second roster opening was needed. Both players will return for the San Jose Sharks against the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

The Rangers’ claim of Iorio marks the second time this season that the RHD has been claimed. The Sharks originally added Iorio after the Washington Capitals placed him on waivers on Oct. 16. In 21 games with the Sharks this season, Iorio registered three assists.

While the Sharks likely were hoping he would clear waivers and go to the San Jose Barracuda, the Rangers provide Iorio a better chance of staying in the NHL. The Rangers are going to be sellers at the NHL Trade Deadline and will have openings for a full-time spot in their top-six defensemen.

Throughout the season, the Sharks have sometimes had nine defensemen on their roster. Currently, the team is down to a traditional seven. The Sharks roster breakdown consists of two goalies, 14 forwards, and seven defensemen.
