On Friday night, Montreal Canadiens top prospect Michael Hage had one of his best playmaking nights of the season for the Michigan Wolverines, where he registered 3 assists in a 6-4 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes. Since coming back from the World Juniors, where he helped lead Canada to win a bronze medal after leading the tournament in assists with 13 and points with 15, Hage has continued to be among the top players in the NCAA, as he’s helped the Michigan Wolverines win all 6 of their games since returning from the holiday break on January 9th. After going pointless in the 2nd game of the weekend against the Buckeyes in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime win, Hage now has 2 goals and 5 assists in 6 games since the NCAA Hockey season has resumed.

Friday night was just the 3rd time of the season that Hage recorded 3 assists as one of college hockey’s top playmakers. All 3 plays showed just how creative of a playmaker that he actually is.

His first assist of the game came on a play where he drove up ice as he charged towards the net before feeding his linemate Will Horcoff to open the scoring in the game. It was a typical Hage play, as he loves to drive up ice with the puck and make quick passes in transition.

Later in the game, his 2nd assist would come from winning a faceoff back to his defenseman, who put the puck in the net with a screened wrister from the point. It wasn’t much of a creative play like his other two assists on the night, but it still came from a big play as Hage won his draw very cleanly on that play.

The final assist that Hage would put up was off a play that he often made to create goals during the World Juniors with Canada. Hage would throw the puck off the Ohio State goaltender’s pads on the power play to create a rebound for a teammate to put the puck in the net from in front. The 3rd and final assist was actually on the winning goal scored by T.J. Hughes.
Overall it was a big night for Hage, who seems to be having one of those every weekend this month, while going scoreless in the other matchup of his weekends. It has been something that has been a pattern a lot this season, which could be a sign that the Canadiens prospect needs to work on becoming consistent on the 2nd half of a back-to-back.

Another positive that came from Friday’s 3-assist performance is that he was able to surpass his 34 points in 33 games from his freshman season, as he now has 12 goals and 35 points in 26 games. This shows that there is good progress in his game, and as the season goes down to the wire, he should be on the short list to be among the players who have a shot at winning the Hobey Baker as the best collegiate hockey player.
The Wolverines’ next game will be against their state rivals, the Michigan State Trojans, at 7:00 pm ET on Friday, February 6th. Will Hage have another huge Friday night performance against Michigan State?
