The Washington Capitals have been consistently inconsistent this season, and no stat drove that point home more than their weeks-long stretch without a winning streak.
Coming into Saturday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Washington Capitals had not won twice in a row for 58 days. The 27-game drought began after the Capitals defeated the Los Angeles Kings on December 2 and the San Jose Sharks 7-1 on December 3, the last two victories of a six-game winning streak that began on November 24.
And then the Capitals got meh. Like really, really meh.

Saturday, however, the Capitals’ ended their severe bout of bleh when Justin Sourdif found his own rebound and scored on Frederik Andersen. The Capitals’ 4-3 overtime victory Saturday, combined with their 4-3 shootout victory over the Red Wings two nights prior (h/t to shootout master Nic Dowd) gave them their first winning streak of the new year.
Yay.
