The San Jose Sharks struggled with penalties, whether they were legit or not, as the Calgary Flames snapped a five-game losing streak and won 3-2.

Calgary had five power plays to the Sharks’ three, but there were multiple frustrations with the officiating. Despite that, the Sharks had their chances to win.

Adam Gaudette scored for the third straight game for the San Jose Sharks, who have lost two straight. Will Smith also scored, extending his points streak to four games (2G, 5A), and Alex Nedeljkovic made 39 saves despite appearing to get injured and briefly leaving the game in the third period. The Sharks’ goalie returned without missing any official game action.

Shakir Mukhamadullin and Philipp Kurashev returned from long-term injuries as the Sharks scratched Timothy Liljegren and Pavol Regenda.

Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist for Calgary. Matvei Gridin and Joel Farabee also scored for the Flames. Dustin Wolf made 23 saves.

There were moments throughout the game in which the Flames appeared to take obvious penalties against the San Jose Sharks that went uncalled. During the first period, there was a clear chance for the Sharks to have a five-on-three power-play, but Vincent Desharnais got called for roughing, which apparently evened things out. Ryan Warsofsky was angry and yelling on the bench.

Macklin Celebrini was robbed with an incredible save by Wolf with 20 seconds left in the game.

Smith gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 3:11 of the first period. After Alex Wennberg kept the puck in on the boards, he waited for a lane to open and found Smith with a cross-crease pass.

Frost tied the game 1-1 with a five-on-three power play goal at 14:44. Matt Coronato’s one-timer from the wing rebounded in front for Frost to beat Nedeljkovic over the glove.

Gaudette put the Sharks back in front 2-1 at 1:21 of the second period. William Eklund drove the net and fired two shots before Gaudette pounced on a loose puck in front.

Gridin tied the game 2-2 for the Flames with a one-timer on the right wing at 6:59.

Farabee gave the Flames a 3-2 lead with a shorthanded goal at 6:53 of the third. After the puck popped out in front, Farabee banged it through Nedeljkovic’s legs.
