The Edmonton Oilers placed Calvin Pickard on waivers as the former Maple Leafs goalie ends up with potentially his last chance with the team this season.
On Sunday, the waiver wire saw two names added as the Calgary Flames waived Justin Kirkland, but also in a surprising addition — the Edmonton Oilers placed goaltender Calvin Pickard on there as well:
The news was broken by Elliotte Friedman on X:
With the Oilers running with Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram for now, the team is electing to give Pickard some time to regain his confidence down in the AHL (if he clears).
Pickard has a 5-6-2 record with a 3.68 GAA and .871 SV%.
He did once play for the Maple Leafs organization as he spent the majority of the time with the team way back in 2018, and he skated in 33 games for the Marlies and only one with the NHL squad before he really took off.
Pickard now will be able to have a claim placed on him in the next 24 hours, and for a team who is needing someone with legitimate playoff experience with some decent numbers.
For his career, he has a 74-77-14 record with a 2.96 GAA and .901 SV%. He has spent time with Colorado, Toronto, Philadelphia, Arizona, Detroit, and Edmonton throughout his 11-year NHL career.
It’s unknown where Pickard is going to end up as the veteran has been struggling this year but perhaps a confidence boost down in the AHL will do him some good.
