Former Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has spoken publicly about his health status for Game 5 following an injury scare in Game 4 against Ottawa.

Following a disappointing Game 4 loss in Ottawa, the Maple Leafs will have another chance to close out their first-round series against the Senators on Tuesday night in front of what is expected to be a raucous crowd at Scotiabank Arena.

The hit dropped Tavares to the ice and left him in clear discomfort. After slowly making his way back to his feet and onto the bench, Tavares was then sent to the locker room where he remained for much of the overtime period before eventually returning to the game.

On Monday, following practice, Tavares spoke about why he was sent to the locker room and what the extent of his injury was. According to the former captain, he was hit in the jaw, which caused him some discomfort in the jaw and cheek area. He also confirmed that it was a concussion spotter who summoned him to the back.

Thankfully, Tavares did not suffer a concussion on the hit, which was a clear missed penalty on Zub’s part, considering the fact that not only was there head contact, but it happened away from the play as well.

Tavares has a tremendous 2024-25 season, and his resurgence has continued into the playoffs. Thus far, Tavares has tallied 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points across his first 4 games in this playoff run.
