The Calgary Flames acquired defenceman Gavin White from the Dallas Stars in exchange for Jeremie Poirier only hours before their game vs. the Maple Leafs.
The team made a deal on Monday evening to trade defenceman Jeremie Poirier to the Dallas Stars for defenceman Gavin White:
Poirier, 23, has recorded six points (1 goal, 5 assists) in 35 games with the Calgary Wranglers (AHL) this season, in addition to 24 PIM.
Calgary and Dallas swap minor leaguers ahead of roster freeze
The 6’1, 190-pound defenceman has skated in 198 career AHL games, all with the Wranglers, posting 102 points (18 goals, 84 assists). Poirier was originally selected by Calgary in the third round (72nd overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.
White, 23, has recorded five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in 23 games with the Texas Stars (AHL) this season. In 118 career AHL games, the defenseman has totalled 27 points (5 goals, 22 assists), all with Texas
He was originally selected by Dallas in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft.
The move comes only hours before Calgary is set to face off against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and with the team looking to make several more moves it seems they were willing to move Poirier.
It could also be due to his inconsistency and drop-off since his time with the Saint John Sea Dogs in the QMJHL. He went from 168 points in 225 games to his current AHL numbers; a pretty significant drop-off.
While a minor move, Poirier will give the Stars a bit more offensive help on the backend and could be a solid part of their minor system for the rest of the year meanwhile White gives the Flames more of a defensive player.
