The Detroit Red Wings looked like a much different team on Monday than the one dominated on Saturday by the league-leading Colorado Avalanche.
John Gibson made 22 saves, and the Red Wings stifled the high-powered Avalanche 2-0 at Ball Arena.
It was Gibson’s fourth shutout this season and 28th of his career. The Red Wings (33-18-6, 72 points) ended a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) and snapped an eight-game skid in Colorado (0-7-1) that dated back to Feb. 27. 2016.
The Red Wings protected a one-goal lead almost the entire night after Marco Kasper scored during the game’s first shift. Lucas Raymond, who assisted on Kasper’s goal, scored an empty-net goal with 31 seconds remaining to seal the outcome. Dylan Larkin assisted on both goals.
It’s the first time in 80 games and nearly a calendar year that Colorado has been shut out (Feb. 4, 2025, at Vancouver).
The Avalanche (36-9-9, 81 points) defeated the Red Wings 5-0 two days earlier at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings visit Utah on Wednesday (9 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network) in their final game before the Olympic break.
Kasper’s goal 33 seconds into the first period was the only scoring until the final minute of the third. He went to the net with his stick on the ice during a two-on-one with Raymond and redirected in a pass for his sixth goal of the season.
