Goaltender Calvin Pickard was placed on NHL waivers Sunday by the Edmonton Oilers; should the Detroit Red Wings jump at the chance to claim him within the 24-hour window?

During his time with the Detroit Red Wings, Calvin Pickard didn’t accomplish much.

He played 3 games as a Red Wing and spent most of his time in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, with a record of 21-16-5, a 2.58 goals-against average, and a .918 save percentage.

He’d later find a home with the Edmonton Oilers and work himself up the ranks through the minor-league system with the Bakersfield Condors. He’d be part of a plucky combination with Stuart Skinner, where they’d take the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cups.

With the ascent of Connor Ingram, Pickard’s time in the NHL with the Oilers is done after being placed on waivers Sunday.

Should the Detroit Red Wings claim former goaltender Calvin Pickard off NHL waivers?

They could run a three-goalie scenario with the Griffins, which is helpful in times of emergency if injuries arise.

Pickard, who is familiar with the Red Wings, could also fit into a similar role in the NHL, giving a chance to give Cam Talbot and John Gibson a break while stepping in occasionally.

He’s helped backstop the Oilers to two Stanley Cup finals now and could be a free depth addition. Pickard’s record this season is dreadful (5-6-2), with a 3.68 GAA and a .871 save percentage.

His 2-year, $1 million average annual value deal expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, and he could be a rental for the rest of the year.
