Poirier, 23, was originally selected by Calgary with the 72nd overall pick in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft. While he signed with the Flames, the offensively inclined defenseman never appeared in an NHL game. Instead, Poirier spent four seasons with the organization’s AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, where he developed a reputation as a productive puck-moving defenseman.
