We can all agree that the 4–3 overtime loss to the Wild last night leaves a strange taste.

Let’s be honest: the game came down to a technical detail that went the wrong way for Montreal.

Look at the Kaprizov sequence—it’s pretty clear. Joel Eriksson Ek set an effective “pick” on Nick Suzuki just before the game-winning goal.

The officials could have called an obstruction on the play.

Instead of getting a power-play opportunity, the Canadiens head home with just one point in their pocket. It’s unfortunate, especially since the group has shown strong resilience with a 31-17-8 record this season.

Nick Suzuki now has 65 points in the NHL this season after 56 games. He picked up another assist last night, once again proving that he is the offensive engine of this team, regardless of the final result.

“How is Suzuki supposed to follow his man when Eriksson Ek runs a “pick and roll” at the blue line?

– Nicolas Cloutier

Even though Jakub Dobes stopped 20 shots, his .857 save percentage shows that it was a difficult night. You can’t put everything on his shoulders, but the goaltender has had calmer outings in the past.

Canadiens settle for one point after disputed obstruction on Nick Suzuki in OT

Even though Kirby Dach found the back of the net for his 7th of the season, there’s a sense that the team deserved better. Management can at least take some comfort in the steady effort from the young players in a hostile environment.

“That’s such a tough break for Montreal in OT on the PK.

Easy argument to be made for interference on Suzuki right before that goal.

Habs bench was livid.”

– Marco D’Amico

It also has to be said that Lane Hutson is the hot hand on the blue line. With an assist and a +3 rating last night, he’s showing impressive maturity for his age.

On Wednesday, the Habs wrap up their road trip in Winnipeg before heading into the Olympic break. It’s time to turn the page and build on the positives from this tightly contested matchup.
